Why Baby Walker Is Not Safe At AllWhy Baby Walker Is Not Safe At All
Baby walkers are advertised as fun for little ones to move around and entertain themselves. Some claim that regular use of walker also stimulates the early development of walking of children, though pediatricians are damn against this baby walker for decades. In Canada, the sale of these baby walkers is banned already. The American Academy of Pediatrics also is thinking to do that because baby walkers are dangerous according to a recent study on children. Infant walkers can cause serious injuries in young children, and AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) continues to recommend that they not be sold or used.
A Montessori caregiver in Torrance, CA says that according to a recent study in the journal ‘Pediatrics’, children less than 15 months of age were treated in US emergency departments for injuries related to walkers. In Canada, the sale of baby walkers is banned and AAP is also thinking to follow those steps now.
Many parents think that baby walkers will help their children learn to walk. But according to most of the pediatricians in Torrance, CA, walkers do little good for a child’s development and may even delay it. But, the most negative point of a baby walker is that it may create accidents. The majority of injuries happen when children fall downstairs in a walker, injuring their head or neck, sometimes seriously. But, it is not just stairs, children in walkers can get their fingers caught, pull things down on themselves, or grab dangerous things like sharp objects or hot liquids that would otherwise be out of their reach. Children, may fall out of walkers and get hurt. If there is a pool or spa or any type of water body, and nobody notices, children may go near that water with the help of a walker, and if fall down, may get drowned. So it is seen that there are various problems attached to a baby walker because a baby walker makes a child extra mobile.
A preschool caregiver of a reputed primary school in Torrance, CA, thinks that like Canada baby walkers in the US should be banned. The American Academy of Pediatrics is urging the U.S. government to stop the use of baby walkers completely. At present, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has been promoting new safety standards for baby walkers that are supposed to lead to fewer injuries.
Instead of buying a baby walker, most pediatricians in the United States, recommend lots of tummy time and freedom to crawl and cruise. It helps to enhance motor skills. But before allowing your children for crawling, cruising, and exploration, be sure the environment and surroundings are safe enough for them. Be sure that the furniture has no sharp edges and they are not in close proximity. When infants become mobile, safety is a huge consideration. Taking all types of safety measures is necessary to prevent accidents and encourage safe development. Some children become too mobile at this age. Ask family and friends to keep an eye on exploring toddlers for extra supervision.
